Chapter Twenty-Three

Monday morning, Macy rushed past the crowd in the lobby to get to her desk earlier than usual. Stopping for coffee or to read her horoscope were luxuries for people that didn’t have any worries. She had dozens. In addition to returning calls and replying to messages, she needed the extra time to prepare for the audit.

At least last night her mother sounded fine when they talked. Whatever was going on at home didn’t equate to ‘Mom is sick, come home right away.’ She sighed. Whatever her brother had to tell her would have to wait until after the audit.

“You’re here early this morning.” Avery’s voice washed over her with a fragrance so crisp it woke her senses. Every time he came into her office, his scent and masculinity lingered long after he was gone. Was he even aware of his mystique and how his presence overpowered her?

“So are you. I’ve got a good reason for being here. What’s your excuse?” She tilted her head, hoping her prettiest side showed. He probably didn’t notice the lilt in her voice, but she heard her attempt to be playful and coy.

He slid into the chair. “Other than the night I nearly broke your ankle, I enjoyed our time in Geneva. Maybe I ought to apologize for kissing you, but I won’t”

“I wasn’t going to ask you to.”

“What was your horoscope this morning? Did it say anything about a new relationship?”

“No way am I telling you. You’re making fun of me.” The post this morning mentioned the words soul mate and a business alliance. But he’d think she was making it all up.

“Did you read mine?”

“I don’t know your birthday.”

“How can you know my business by way of the tabloids and not know I was born on July fifteenth?”

“I focused on the big stuff.” She tapped her pencil on the desk.

“Are you busy tonight?” He pulled his chair closer to her.

“Why? After our night at your club was cut short, I think you and I shouldn’t…”

“My father was way out of line, if he didn’t get the message at the club, he’s gotten it now. That I know for sure.”

“Does he object to me or does he object to your dating in general?”

“Neither matters to me,” he said.

She pulled back in her chair. Flirting with him had been fun. Taking things further was risky. “What about Celeste?”

He rubbed his chin. “I knew you were going to say that, and you have nothing to be concerned about. I’ve spoken to Celeste. She’s straight.”

Macy raised her eyebrows. “I doubt that.” She mumbled.

“I owe you a dinner. What do you say?”

She teased the idea for a moment. Wanting to say yes, but knowing she should say no. “Okay, what do you have in mind?”

“I’ll pick you up at seven.” He stood. “Oh, yeah, and I’ll need your address.”

She scribbled her address on a piece of paper and handed it to him. He reached for it. His hand lingered against hers. Regardless of what her horoscope said, he was moving too fast.
